The Asian-Pacific Society
of Atherosclerosis and Vascular Disease was established in 1996.
The Founding Chairman was Professor Akira Yamamoto of Japan. The
current President is Professor Suphachai Chaithiraphan of Thailand.
The main aim of the Society
is to provide a forum for Scientists and Clinicians in the region
interested in atherosclerosis to meet regularly and share updates
on the subject, as well as highligh similarities and differences
of the disease as seen in the region compared to that seen in the
western world where studies and guidelines usually originate. Given
the changing health and disease patterns in the region, this is
an increasingly important area.
In addition, regional
collaboration on common research interests are be encouraged.
To achieve these aims,
APSAVD conducts a regional Congress every two years. The next Congress
will be in Hong Kong in 2008. Other smaller meetings are also held,
often in association with local Societies. Meetings which address
a specific topic may also be arranged.
APSAVD is a member of
the International Society of Atherosclerosis.
